Tournament Rules

State Championships

Division One: Ages 10 and under
Division Two: Ages 11-16
Division Three: Ages 17 and over

Competitors in each division will need to execute tricks from either the 1S and 2S trick ladders (see Trick List below). Only one attempt is allowed on each trick. Tricks may be done in ANY order. Points are awarded based on the difficulty of the trick (see points below). Simply tell the judges which trick you will be performing. As each trick is made, the competitor continues and attempts the next trick. If one trick is missed, the competitor is allowed to continue. When a second trick is missed, the competitor is finished for that trick ladder. The competitor’s score will be the point total of combined tricks made from both trick ladders. The winner will be the player with the highest combined total from both the 1S and 2S trick ladders.

Specific rules for executing tricks:

- The yo-yo must be caught with one hand and not trapped against the body.

- If excess string is hanging out and the yo-yo cannot be thrown down and returned to your hand after a trick is completed, it is considered a miss.

- Any throw made while in the trick box counts as a try.

- Only the following tricks may be done while the contestant is on deck (on stage but outside the trick circle): Throwdown, spinner, forward pass, a single Loop the Loop, or string adjustments. Practicing a contest trick outside the circle or box once the contest starts shall count as a miss.

- Loop the Loops must be done with feet in the trick box.

- The judge’s decision is final and not subject to appeal.

- Any yo-yo may be used or changed. Contestant must have a yo-yo present during competition.

Advanced Freestyle Competiton

1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A Divisions

Each competitor will execute a three-minute routine executed with music supplied by the contestant. Points will be awarded by the judges for technical execution, performance style and yo-yo artistry. Technical execution points will be awarded for: advance level tricks completed, trick difficulty, originality, and transitions between tricks. Performance style and yo-yo artistry points will be awarded for elegance of yo-yo control, speed control, stage presence and choreography.

For division specific rules, please refer to the National Yo-Yo Organization website.

Spin Top Competition

There will be one open division only. Contestants will perform tricks from the trick ladder below. Contestants will have one chance to make a trick. If they miss a trick, they will continue on to the next trick. When they miss a second trick, they are done. The competitor’s score will be the number of tricks made.
